A private career college is a private business which offers occupational training programs. These schools are privately owned and operated businesses. Most provinces require Private Colleges to be registered in accordance with their provincial Private Occupational Training Act. This registration does not guarantee quality, so it is a good idea to research the private training school you plan to attend.

Some questions to research and ask:
- How well connected and recognized is the training institution in your chosen field?
- What is the tuition and what does it include? Are there additional fees such as application fees, seat confirmation deposits, registration fees, or books and special equipment or clothing?
- Do they offer scholarships or bursaries?
- Is there a student services or support services centre to assist students free of charge with personal, career-related, or academic concerns? Are there free counselling services?
- Is there a work placement component in the program and if so, is there someone to work with you to find the best placement for you? And is there continued support and communication while you are doing your placement?
- What is their success rate for graduates finding employment? Before graduation? After graduation? 6-months after graduation?
- What career choices are open for graduates of the program you are interested in taking?
- Do they have industry partners?
- Does the institution partner with any other educational institutions?
- In addition to knowing the broad overview of the program you are interested in taking, read all individual course descriptions.
- Thoroughly check their website.
